October 4th, 2016
Dear ACSD Community,
I wanted to share some exciting news with all of you: on October 3rd, 2016, the ACSD Board approved the recommendation for our district to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) World District! This sets in motion the work we have done as a community over the course of the last three years in building a vision of an educational experience that prepares all students for success beyond graduation, in a world that is increasingly global. We believe that the IB program supports our ACSU Mission, “to provide an innovative, rigorous, and supportive educational community that inspires a passion for learning and cultivates empathy and responsibility.”
We are excited by what we’ve seen in our 18-month study of the IB program and the impact we believe it will have on our students’ experiences and our community. The International Baccalaureate program is highly regarded throughout the world for its focus on student-centered, personalized learning. It supports students in looking deeply at the world around them through inquiry and analysis of real world issues. The IB program provides a structure to collaborate and work across subject areas to make learning more relevant and impactful.
We are seeking authorization in three International Baccalaureate programs: the Primary Years Program in our seven elementary schools (PK- Grade 6), the Middle Years Program at MUMS and MUHS (Grades 7-10), and the Diploma Program at MUHS (Grades 11-12). Over the course of the next three years, we will be working towards full accreditation as an IB World District. Full details of our timeline and academic year development will be shared in the months ahead, along with further information about the opportunities that International Baccalaureate will bring to our students.
Thanks to all for your continued involvement in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton Salisbury, Shoreham, and Weybridge schools. I am so excited to be moving forward, together, to make a real and lasting impact on the lives of our students!
Peter Burrows, ACSD Superintendent
